Crew Capacity and Project Management
OSP engineering projects are often time-sensitive. Fiber deployment timelines are driven by grant funding deadlines, competitive pressures, and construction season constraints. Your engineering contractor needs to have the crew capacity to meet your schedule, and the project management systems to track progress and flag issues early.
Ask about:
- Current workload and available capacity for your project
- How they staff up for large or accelerated projects
- Their project management methodology and reporting cadence
- How they handle scope changes and unexpected field conditions
A contractor who is perpetually overcommitted will miss your deadlines regardless of their technical capabilities.
Safety Culture
OSP engineering involves field work near energized lines, in traffic, and in challenging terrain. A contractor's safety record is a direct indicator of their operational discipline and management quality.
Ask for their OSHA recordable incident rate and their approach to safety training and compliance. A contractor who cannot answer these questions clearly, or who deflects them, is telling you something important.
Regional Experience
OSP engineering is not purely a technical discipline. It involves navigating relationships with pole owners, right-of-way authorities, and local contractors. A firm with deep regional experience brings knowledge of local permitting processes, utility company preferences, and construction conditions that a national firm parachuting into your market may lack.
